The Perfect Indian Wedding

Get set for the greatest shopping trip of your life. Yes, it is D-day, the day you have been waiting for all your life and you cannot look anything less than perfect.

Those sparkling eyes, glowing skin, perfect hair and the spectacular wedding ensemble are not just the stuff that dreams are made of. They are very much a tangible reality. Thankfully, the wedding wear market in India is as flourishing as it gets. There are choices galore for both the bride and the groom. If you are one of those who've planned the perfect wedding with the perfect wedding wear all their life, then the variety of choices may befuddle you. Picking the right style, colour and fabric may seem like looking for a needle in a big haystack. Don't despair, we will help you make all the major fashion decisions.

Pricing

Bridal wear in India has seen a sea change. No more those garish, kitschy colours and ensembles. What with this segment raking in all the moolah, it has seen the entry of top line designers and with them they bring the sophisticated and stylish look. And let's not forget, when we talk designer wear, we mean big bucks. The wedding ensemble for the bride can cost anything between Rs 13,000 to an obscene amount that cannot be mentioned for designer wear, depending on the kaarigari, etc. The groom's wear can begin at Rs 8,000 and go up to lakhs. Add to that Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 for the bride's hair and makeup by top makeup artists and boy, the sky's the limit. But, who's complaining? Indian weddings are all about lavishness, right?

Styles

For the bride: Once the price hurdle is out of the way, the actual selection process starts. As said, the garish colours and styles of yore have given way to the new age bride and groom. They are conscious of following the latest trends. The
traditional heavy red or maroon lehenga is passe, instead, brides are opting for different colours, fabrics and embellishments. Suggests designer Rina Dhaka, "Orange red is very strong this fall, so all those brides who are fashion conscious can go for bright orange, red and metallic colours. A lot of shiny gold, silver, turquoise and peacock blue can be seen." Sequins work and handwork is very much in demand along with beadwork. Traditional work, like dapka and gota can still be seen, while zardozi is out. Even the silhouettes have changed and become more modern. The cholis have become shorter and trendier. While the lehenga has become more stylish, with closer silhouettes and the saris have interesting, new drapes.

Hair & makeup

The look would be incomplete without the right hair and makeup. The hairdo has definitely become more fashionable by embellishing it with beautiful crystals, flowers and other hair jewellery. Says makeup artist Bharti Taneja, "In hairstyles, high buns are always the best option for brides so that they can place their duppattaeasily over the head. But buns are surely being done with lots of accessories and flowers." As for makeup, the look is glossy and shimmering. The natural look is preferred over the heavy makeup look. Adds Bharti, "For makeup, the base is very simple and sober and it is basically all natural makeup. Changing style of the bindi instead of using
the maang-teeka has also come in. The bindis across the forehead have gone and brides prefer to only have crystals on the side or below their eyebrows which further looks very elegant and simple."

For the groom:

The possibilities are endless not just for the bride, but the groom as well. It's not about the black suit anymore. Rather, it's about smart cuts and exquisite craftsmanship. Shah Rukh popularised the bright, crinkled dupattas with long kurtas in films like Kabhi Khushi, Kabhie Gham and the look continues to be popular. Achkans with hand woven shawls and long tussar silk kurtas are hot. The work is light and subtle. Says designer Kavita Bhartia, "For men, I like more traditional and texture based materials with chikan or kantha
work.'ss mascara for the lower lashes. Begin where the lashes meet the rim of the lower eyelid, gently stroke downward.
